DUTCH PEOPLE,What's the meaning of the name "van" in most of the Dutch people's names?

Most Dutch people have the name "van" or "van der" or "van den" or "von" in their names. What's the meaning of all these names? Do these names have history or something?

DUTCH PEOPLE,What's the meaning of the name "van" in most of the Dutch people's names?
On 18 August 1811 when Napoleon Boneparte - whose French army were occupying the Netherlands - signed a decree establishing a registry of births, deaths and marriages. Families, who until that time had got on just fine without a surname, were suddenly obliged to pick a surname.

Genealogist Rick van der Wielen says that traditionally the Dutch used a patronymic system in which the father's first name became the first son's last name, and the other kids got the left over names from the grandfather, great grandfather and so on. Gradually in the 1600, people began to turn the patronymic name into modern surnames - Jan Hendricksen (Jan the son of Hendrick) gave his son the surname Hendricksen instead of Jansen. A suffix was often added to indicate "son of" or "daughter of". (Ex. Jan, son of Hendrick would be written Jan Hendricks, Jan Hendrickse or Jan Hendricksen.).

Women took a feminine form such as "s", "se", "sd", "sdr", and even "sen" which implied the full suffix of "sdochter", meaning "daughter of". (Ex. Jannetje Dirksdr would be Jane, daughter of Dirk.

'But the Dutch, being independently minded, couldn't agree on a single system. For instance one of the sons might use the name Hendricksen, while another might call himself Jansen, with another sibling basing his name on his town of origin and another on his occupation, Brouwer (Brewer),' says van der Wielen.

Incidentally Van der Wielen's own name refers to a pool of water along the coast that remains after the tide goes out and not the Dutch word for wheel.

The Dutch Top Ten

Genealogist Miriam Klaassen says that a combination of unflattering nicknames, patronymic-based names, association with place of origin and references to occupation have become the most popular surnames.

The top 10 surnames include: De Jong (the young), Jansen or Janssen (son of Jan), Bakker (baker), Visser (fisher), Smit (smith) and Meijer/Meyer (land agent).

Van Dijk is another all time favourite but boringly enough it refers to the Dutch preoccupation with keeping sea water out of their clogs rather than a reference to the mother's sexual preference.

My personal favourite is Van den/der Berg (from/of the mountain). Now that has got to be a joke.

We can have a giggle about the Dutch first name Pik which seems to relate to the Dutch word for the male organ but we should not lose the run of ourselves. Kok for instance means cook.

In the movie 'meet the parents', Ben Stiller plays a character named Gay Fokker and we are all supposed to laugh. But Fokker (breeder) is a perfectly legitimate surname in the Netherlands. And while we are on the subject, my heart goes out to the Dutch man who proudly announced 'I fok horses' when asked about his occupation during an interview on British television some years back.
Reply:van=from

vander = from the
Reply:"Van" = from; "van der" and "van den" = from the.

For example, the name "Van den Hoogte" means "from the high places/from the hills" (hoogte = high place).

"Von" is German, also means "from". "Vonder" or "Von der" would also mean "from the". (I think. I only speak Dutch, so I'm assuming that one.)
Reply:Van=from ...location of where the family originated
Reply:Van = From

von= from in German

It can be from the area where the family originated, but it can also be from what family they belong to. The German composer Ludwig von Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany, and his father was named Johann Beethoven, so Ludwig von Beethoven's name means that he came from his father.
Reply:That would drive me nuts! I don't even like reading that word that many times.
Reply:In Dutch van stands for From, just like in German von stands for From too.

What's the meaning of the follwoing words ( names of countries) :?
Netherlands means "low countries."

Italy was named after a Greek family that was prominent on the penninsula several thousand years ago--prior to the Roman Empire.

2. Bull/Calf

3. Originally from Latin terra australis incognita - "unknown southern land"

4. Land of the Franks -%26gt; Franks later became a word for "free"

5. America is just a feminine name for the continent, we used "the United States" because of what the preamble says.

6. From the word Kanata meaning "village" or "settlement"

7. The Suittes

8. Chinese: Zhong Guo - "central country" The English name of China comes from the Qin Dynasty, possibly in a Sanskrit form; the pronunciation "China" came to the western languages through the Persian word 賳 "Chin".
Reply:The Netherlands are named for their situation between (nether) the other northern European countries.

Italy is named for what used to just be the southern part of the country. Nobody knows exactly where "italia" came from, but they think it might be from the Greek "viteliu", meaning "land of young cattle".

Australia was named for it's location; Australis means "southern" in latin.

France was named for the Franks, the tribe which made up the dominant portion of the population at the time of naming.

America was named for Amerigo Vespucci, a cartographer associated with the early discovery of the continent.

Canada comes from an Iroquois word meaning "village" or "settlement".

Switzerland is named for one of the early groups of people from the area, the Schwyz.

And China was named from Western misunderstanding... it's named for the Qin Dynasty, which sounds an awful lot like "chin" when spoken. China (in Chinese) is called Zhongguo.
Reply:I usually do not recommend Wikipedia, but in this case, it's an excellent resource. Just look up each country - they always have an explanation of how to pronounce the name and its origins.

Can Someone Tell Me the Meaning of the Following Names?

I have tried searching for awhile on the internet for meanings of the following girls' names and I'm not coming up with much.

The names are:

Jacqueline

Suzanne

And if someone could tell me what being a supplanter is, I would be very grateful.

Thanks very much.

Can Someone Tell Me the Meaning of the Following Names?
Jacqueline- This is a Hebrew name meaning someone who is protected by god.

Suzanne- This is a Hebrew name meaning Lily.

supplant means to survive.
Reply:Jacqueline: a small female child, later turning to an adult.

from the roman quackaline.

Suzanne: a small female child, which becomes an adult.

from the hebrew sussibabe.
Reply:Jacqueline is from Jack a trade know as a steeple jack some one who climbs steeple towers on churches or the steel frame in tower blocks sky scrapers. as for suzanne I don't know about that hope this helps.

Does anyone know where I can find the Christian meaning of the names .?

Does anyone know where I can find the Christian meaning of the names Paris, Jayde (Jade), and Jacquelyn. Or do you know the Christian meanings of these names? Thank you.

Does anyone know where I can find the Christian meaning of the names .?
Jacquelyn at least I can help you with, it is a diminuative feminine form of Jacques = James or Jacob, the name of two of the twelve Apostles and a brother of Jesus. The other two are a bit questionable as Christian names. Paris is a classical name, after Paris son of Priam King of Troy (Homer's liad) but it was given to Christians by Shakespeare's time (name of Juliet's suiter in Romeo and Juliet) and Jayde I would take to be derived from the gemstone (gem names were frequently given girls in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries). James or Jacob means Supplanter.

Many larger dictionaries include a special section on Names.

This helps in reconstructing family history because religion or ethnicity is shown in the name and philosophy behind it. All three of these names are French, Jacquelyn a possibilty in Roman Catholic registers, the others unlikely.
Reply:This is a great site to find Christian meanings of names.

http://www.homesteaddesigns.co... Report Abuse

Reply:I doubt that meanings of names help reconstruct family history.
Reply:Paris is in no way Christian. Paris is named for the Parisii, who were a tribe of Celts.

Jade means "loin." As in your nether regions.

Jacquelyn would have the same meaning as Jack, or John. Like John the Baptist. But again, not Christian. It's Hebrew. It means "God has given."

If you don't consider Jack equal to John, there is another meaning for it that I saw, again Hebrew. In that case it would mean "supplanter."

What is the meaning of the gaelic names mainistir, fhear and maighe?

I was in fermoy and seen three statues outside of the church of ireland church and inscribed on the base were the three words, mainistir, fhear and maighe. What is the meaning of the words and the significance of the statues please.

What is the meaning of the gaelic names mainistir, fhear and maighe?
Mainistir = Monastery

Fhear = Man

Maighe = A plain, also the name of a river, also spelled Moy

So all told this means the Monastery of Fermoy (a town in County Cork)

The statues are possibly allegorical figures out of the history of the town.
Reply:The guy above is right, the name of the town in Irish is Mainistir Fhear Maighe. Fermoy is an anglicisation of that name.

What is the meaning of the Japanese names for Koi?

(I'm just buying some for my new pond and was very curous)

Thanks

What is the meaning of the Japanese names for Koi?
There are names for the different colors. Here are a few websites with a list: http://www.inlandkoisociety.org/Koi%20na... , http://members.aol.com/pkmajor/page13.ht...

If you want to see diagrams of the fish: http://www.pondkoi.com/koi_guide.htm

or photos (and articles): http://www.wetwebmedia.com/PondSubWebInd...

The prices are based on the color/pattern, and the lineage of the fish. So think of these as a certain breed of dog - you can get one from a local "puppy mill" or buy one from a professional breeder using AKC registered parents with championship bloodlines. See the difference?

What is the meaning of names "Vaishalini" & "Manasa"?

The meaning of the name Manasa is Intelligence

The origin of the name Manasa is Indian (Sanskrit)

As for Vaishalini I have only found an Indian name pretty similar:

Vaishali, a Hindu female name which is the name of an ancient city.

What is the meaning of names "Vaishalini" %26amp; "Manasa"?
REGARDING VAISHALINI

Vishal is a very common first name found in India. It is also a common adjective found in north Indian languages.

The word has its root in the parent language Sanskrit in Indian languages. It means the great expense, wide, broad and spacious. But dose not to refer to size. The meaning comes closer to grand or great. There is no exact translation of Vishal in English. A few interpretations are immense, Unstoppable One, One Who Dreams Impossible Dreams, or One Who Reaches for the Sky and is Creative Beyond All Dreams.

1. The female name Vaishalini comes from Vaishali an ancient state the Himaliyan Gangetic region of present Bihar in India.

Vaishali derives its name from King Vishal of the Mahabharata stage age.

Even before the appearance of Budhism %26amp; Jainism Vaishali was the capital of the Republican Licchivi State.

Very little is known about the early history of Vaishali. Vishnoo Puran records 34 kings of Vaishali, the first being Nabhaga, who is believed to have abdicted his throne over a matter of human rights and believed to have declared: "I am now a free tiller of the soil, king over my acre."

The last among the 34 was Sumati, who is considered a contemporary of King Dusrath, father of the Lord Rama.

So many references of Vaishali can be seen in literatures of Budhism %26amp; Jainism. According to the information in these texts, Vaishali was established as a republic in 6 centuary BC, prior to the birth of Budha(563 BC), and was the world's first republic.

In Vaishali, Lord Mahavir was born, Budha delivered his last sermon at Vaishali here.

Vaishali is also renowned as the land of AMBAPALI ( Amrapali), the great Indian courtesan (Prostitute).

One of Buddha's favourite resort, Vaishali, is said to be named after King Vishal, a ruler during the times of Ramayana. There exists a large, but a ruined fort, which is believed to be built by King Vishal.

So, the first meaning of VAISHALINI is “GRAND OR GREAT LADY”.

BUT

There is another very popular explanation of this name among the common people:

2. Vaishali derives from “VESHYALYA” which means “COUNTRY (HOUSE) OF PROSTITUTES” = VESHYA (PROSTITUTE) + ALYA (COUNTRY or HOUSE.

In diachronic (historical) linguistics, semantic change is a change in one of the meanings of a word. Each word has various senses and connotations, which can be added, removed, or altered over time, often to the extent that cognates across space and time have very different meanings. Semantic change is one of three major processes to find a designation for a concept. The study of semantic change can be seen as part of etymology, onomasiology, semaciology and semantics.

So, VAISHALINI means “A LADY FROM A PROSTITUTE COUNTRY”.

For reference see Hindi novel VAISHALI KI NAGAR VADHU

REGARDING MANASA

There is not much to say. Jassy is quite right in her answer.

It means WISDOM INTELLIGENCE

What language are these names and what are the meaning of these names?

Franchesca

Jacqueline

Juinice (pronounced waniece; waneece)

Xandria; it has two dots above the a (the dots are side by side). It's pronounced Zandria.

Also the name Clarissa (I believe it's Italian; but not sure; think the meaning is beautiful; am I correct?).

What language are these names and what are the meaning of these names?
FRANCHESCA - American; free

JACQUELINE - French; to protect

JUINICE - Couldn't find the exact name; the closest I came was

JUIN - French, the month of June

XANDRIA - the closest I came was XANDER, American version

of Alexandria

CLARISSA - Latin; brilliant

2 - French

3 - I have no idea

4 - probably comes from Alexandria - Greek

5 - Latin - means "brilliant"
Reply:Clarissa comes from Clara or Chiara, "chiaro" being italian for bright, fair, clear.

Francesca and Jacqueline come from very old names Franco, Frances, Francois (common in all roman-language countries)

and Jacob, Jacques, Jake. I believe both names have their root in antique times. There's a name Jacob mentioned in the bible already. -line is a tipical female ending, being added to a male name.

Xandria, or Alexandria, comes from the name Alexander or Xander, which is probably greek or phoenician, possibly with older roots.

Juinice - I speculate it might have a connection with Giovenice, Giove or Juve being either ancient roman foather of gods (jupiter) or female goddess of youth (Juvena).

Giovinezza means youth (as in being young) in italian.
Reply:I believe their French google name meanings you'll get a 1,000 sites dedicated to this sort of thing.
Reply:have no idea
Reply:Franchesca- fem version of Italian- From the Late Latin name Franciscus which meant "Frenchman"

Jacqueline- fem version of Jacques From the Latin Jacobus, which was from the Greek 螜伪魏蠅尾慰蟼 (Iakobos), which was from the Hebrew name 讬址注植拽止讘 (Ya'aqov).Other theories claim that it is in fact derived from a hypothetical name like 讬址注植拽止讘职讗值诇 (Ya'aqov'el) meaning "may God protect"

Clarissa- English, Italian, Portuguese From the Late Latin name Claritia, which was derived from Latin clarus "clear, bright, famous".

Juinice- From Jonah-From the Hebrew name 讬讜止谞指讛 (Yonah) meaning "dove".

Xandria- From the Greek name 螒位蔚尉伪谓未蟻慰蟼 (Alexandros), which meant "defending men" from Greek 伪位蔚尉蠅 (alexo) "to defend, help" and 伪谓畏蟻 (aner) "man"
Reply:Franchesca: an axe with rounded edge (half circle)

alxander: a name of a herb or plant in Greek, used by the mother of Alexander the great to be pregnant with him

Do you think the meaning of names shapes the children's destiny?

A long time ago, people didn't name their babies because they liked the name, they named it because of the meaning. If you read names in the Bible, they names were usually of what job they did, or what job they were born into. Names were an identification of who you were. Also what the parents were going through, a poor daughter was named Un-pitied in Hosea, and Judah means Praise, because Lea thought her husband would love her now. Her sister Rachel name means Ewe, she was a shepherdess. She was named what she was born into.

Today, you probably won't find it in America, but go to other countries and you will find people who still name their kids to the meaning of the name. I think I will name mine to the meaning, and give them something extrodinary to live up too.

How to interperet the meaning of chemical names?

for example chromate

its symbol is CrO42鈭?br>

with the four coming to the bottom right of the O

and the -2 coming to the top right or the 4

so does tha mean that there are six oxygens and four are neutral and 2 are negative?

need an explanation. thanks

How to interperet the meaning of chemical names?
This comes down to the very basics of chemistry. It means that there are four oxygen atoms, and that the whole ion has a net charge of -2. Specifically, each of two oxygens of the ion has an extra lone pair of electrons which, in a neutral situation, would be shared with another atom. If the compound was neutral there would be no charge on it. However, in this specific case, to be neutral you would need to add two positve charges (to balance out the 2 negative charges). An example would be to use two sodium cations (2Na+) and you would then get the neutral salt Na2CrO4. Notice now that it is neutral, there is no accompanying superscripted number.

So basically, everytime you see a superscripted number after the formula, you know that it is an ion; a CATION has a positive charge and an ANION has a negative charge. Anytime you see a subscripted number, this is an indication of the number of atoms. As an example consider sulfuric acid (H2SO4), we can see that there are 2 hydrogens, 1 sulfur, and 4 oxygens.

Hope this helps.
Reply:The 2- is a superscript, meaning the charge of the chromate ion is negative 2. There are one chromium atom and 4 oxygen atoms. The name is "chromate," and you would probably see this ion bonded to another atom or polyatomic ion.
Reply:The four means there are four oxygen atoms in the molecule, and that overall the molecule has a negative charge of two. You should google chemistry nomenclature and do a quick read, it'll help a lot :o)
Reply:A subscript number indicates how many of the atom are present, unless the number of atoms is 1, in which case there is no number shown. The superscript indicates the charge of the ion. If there is no number in superscript, there is no charge and the object is a molecule, not an ion. So in this case, there are four oxygen atoms and one chromium atom. The charge of the ion is -2. (The polarity of the charge is given after the number. I don't know why.)

The Name Book

This book is awesome...I had the loan of a older version and needed a newer version with more up to date names and their meanings. I am making bookmarks for our local Christian Book Shop to sell, and this has been really helpful. I am thoroughly pleased with my purchase.

Great

My husband and I find this book very helpful. It is in alphabetical order so it makes looking up a name easy.It also includes everything mentioned like all of the meanings and where the names comes from. It is a great tool other than the internet. Even though we are still looking for a name I am sure we wont have a problem finding one in this book.

Perfect for Staff Meetings

I absolutely loved using this book to develop a special page of name recognition for all my employees for a staff meeting. It was very effective and they felt very engaged in the whole message of the meeting.

Thanks loads."

With us naming the newcomer has never been any problem. The seniormost in the household named it and that was the brand the child went by. If one does not like it he/sghe was free to call it by any other endearment but the official record name of the selected one. Long before the appearance of genes we believed in the continuity of the family. The first child was named after the grandfather, the second the great grandfather and the thired the greatgreat grandfather. The child was minutely examined to find out if it has any birthmarks resembling some known ancestor or either side. If identified the child was considered as reincarnation of the ancient worthy and named after him/her.The names represented the distinct regional influences.
Reply:If you mean surnames. Ancesty.Com has a lot of meanings of surnames. The origin and meaning of surnames are not very important to genealogy. The same surname can come from more than one nationality and not every one with the same surname is necessarily related or share ancestors, even those of the same national origin.

According to the video on Fox's Web site, they said the site's name is namestructure.com, so you wrote it down correctly. I even went there and all it looks like is a portal to other sites with "name meanings." Strange...

The best way is to google whatever surname/name you want to know about. The reason is that some sites "specialize" in German-type names, others British-type, etc.

How does one pronounce the name "Drustan" and "Dageus" And what is the meaning of their names?

DRUSTAN comes from the Celtic name Drystan, which was probably derived from drest meaning "riot" or "tumult". It is sometimes associated with Latin tristis "sad", but this connection is doubtful. In Celtic legend Tristan was sent to Ireland in order to fetch Isolde, who was to be the bride of King Mark of Cornwall. Instead, Tristan and Isolde end up falling in love.

I think it's safe to say you pronounce it DROO-stan.

DAGEUS can be traced back to Lough Dagea ("Lake of the Two Geese") on the north side of the Slieve Daene mountain in Ireland. Dageus (a catholic saint) is most likely the Latinized version of the name. The Latin suffix -eus typically means "of, from."

Pronunciation would be either dag-EE-us or dag-AY-us.

A word of warning - there isn't a magic site that will take your name in and give you a 12-generation pedigree. Genealogy takes time.

A second W. of W. - You won't find living people on any of the sites except the phone book one. You will have to find your grandparents' or great grandparents' birth dates and maiden names somewhere besides the Internet.

A third W. of W. - The free sites are supported by advertising, just like TV. You can't watch the Super Bowl without seeing a beer commercial, and you can't surf for dead relatives without seeing an Ancestry advertisement. Don't complain about advertisements. They bring you the "free" sites. There's no such thing as a free lunch.

How many people know the meaning of their names and is it important anymore?

Just wondering

How many people know the meaning of their names and is it important anymore?
Most names in Western culture don't have clear meanings. There are books full of guesses about the meanings that range from reasonable deductions to wild, improbable speculations. Often these books don't agree with one another and don't bother to provide any evidence or references, so when someone "knows" what their name means, more often than not they only know what it means in reference to some particular book. As an example, my name "Benjamin" is Biblical, and it's often said to mean "son of the right hand" in Hebrew, which is more or less how it's interpreted in the Bible, but that ignores the fact that that part of the Bible is full of puns and wordplay. Any objective critic would have to wonder whether the "son of the right hand" interpretation is what "Benjamin", originally the name of a tribe, really meant or whether that's a later reinterpretation of it. But in the "name dictionary" all it's going to say is "son of the right hand" or something like that. They aren't going to tell you about the possibility that the "right hand" interpretation is a pun or a later reanalysis. This problem is commonplace in interpreting Biblical names, but most compilers of name dictionaries just want to churn out copy so they can get paid - they don't care if it's right or not.

Another example is the name "Terence". I once heard someone claim that it means "speaker for the earth" in Latin, mistakenly connecting it to the Latin word "terra", "earth." The problem is that the original Latin is "Terentius". If you understand how Republic-era Latin names worked and how the language works generally, it's pretty obvious that "Terentius" is most likely related to the participle "terens" ("grinding" or "milling"), such that "Terentius" could be an occupational surname, the Latin equivalent of "Miller." Unfortunately, the Romans didn't leave us a dictionary of names coined in the early Republic, so at best we can just make educated guesses about it. Unscrupulous authors though will just say "X means Y" without so much as a "maybe" and usually without having the slightest idea what they're talking about.

In some cases, a name comes directly without alteration from some well known word, like "Phoebe" (Greek, "bright one", sometimes an epithet of the moon or various related goddesses), but instances like that where the meaning is clear and certain are only a tiny fraction of the names in use.
Reply:I don't think to many know the meanings of their names anymore. i don't know mine because i don't remember it. When i named my children i didn't know the meaning of the name. It is important to some people that is why there are juniors and seniors. I know that in some countries their kids are named after something.
Reply:"Erik" : From the Old Norse name "Eiríkr", derived from the elements 'ei' "honored", from Proto Germanic '*aiza-' "honor", or 'ei(r)' "ever", "eternal" (cognate to English "aye" meaning 'always' and Latin "aevum"), and 'ríkr' "ruler", cognate to '-rix' in Celtic names and the Latin noun 'rex'.

So : "Eternal Ruler" or "Honored Ruler". What do you want, it's a traditional name for kings in Scandinavia ...
Reply:I'm working on my family tree and learning about my name and what my ancestors might of done in the past. My 8th great grandparents were the first settlers to start a town in Canada. They had the first home in that area and started a town one building at a time.

I am looking for a source that gives original meaning of names like New York and Moscow?

Names are meaningful words originally. Examples are Portland means a place where there is a port for ships. I want to know what York ment originally and Moscow and thousands of other commonly used but never explained name-words.

I am looking for a source that gives original meaning of names like New York and Moscow?
http://www.dos.state.ny.us/kidsroom/nysf...

http://www.1911encyclopedia.org/Moscow

To search other places go to Yahoo or Google, and type in New York origin OR New York meaning , etc.
Reply:New York was named to honor the Duke of York who purchased the grant of Long Island and other islands on the New England coast made in 1635 to the Earl of Stirling, and, in 1664, the Duke equipped an armed expedition, which took possession of New Amsterdam, which was thenceforth called New York, after the Duke. This conquest was confirmed by the treaty of Breda, in July 1667.

Moscow is named after the river Moskva, where it is located.

Actually a lot of places names comes from the person who owned the area, the geology of the area where it is located or to honor an important person from that place or who made something important for tha place.

Website with meaning of names?

I'm writing a creative story.

I want to look for names for my characters, but I want them to have some meaning. Does anyone know a website that would allow me to convert MEANING into NAME not the other way around.

I need both first and last names.

Website with meaning of names?
Yea just go to www.babynames.com It will give you the meaning to almost any name you want.
Reply:One method: start with the meaning words and some synonyms and then vary some letters and sounds in them until youve created yourself a name you like but that will still suggest or be obviously derived from the original word and so suggest its meaning. That way you can be more specfic and creative in choosing or inventing the exact meaning you want to convey with the name you created. You can be more specific and subtle and creative than, "Miss Joy, Helen Dullboy, Dan Zeus, Mr Meriwether."

"John" means God+Love in some fashion or other but few think of that meaning with the word today. "Where do the Wickets live? Oh, they're next door to the Debbels." But Google might find the reference you asked for if you work with your query wording a little.
Reply:I know that you can go to any baby name website and get the meaning of names, so far as lasts names some may probably give this as well. just place in search bar meaning of names, baby names etc. There are many sites that you can go to.

How important is it to philosophy participants to learn &use the defined concepts, the names &meaning of terms

in the subject or discipline of philosophy?

How important is it to philosophy participants to learn %26amp;use the defined concepts, the names %26amp;meaning of terms
As I read many of the questions in this section it appears to me that concepts and terminology in the discipline is pretty much ignored for a large portion of participants.

Many of these questions obviously belong in other categories.

This a step below Phil 101 .
Reply:For purposes of clarity it may be helpful to make reference to the proper terminologies and concepts set up by those from the past who gave us such things. But someone had to be the first to coin those phrases and such. A valid point is no less valid simply because of a lack of use of 'proper' terms. I believe it is important not to get too highly married to such terms because clinging to them with that kind of tenacity may preclude the introduction of new or modfied ideas.
Reply:It is not important at this time but whatever it is you are talking about, I would like to hear about it.
Reply:I think learning concepts that are just synonyms for other words we already use is drudgery, but it gives philosophers a common language to communicate.

However, there are phrases or words that aren't easily replaced without a lengthy explanation, and those are important to understand. For example a tautology is an argument that relies upon itself being true to be true. For example, if I say God exists because the bible says so (and the bible comes from God), that's tautological reasoning. If you can counter my argument by saying that's a tautology it will improve the quality of our communication.

Also, the fact that more people can use a word to commit an idea to memory raises the quality of public discourse. An ad hominem attack is one that focuses on who's making the argument rather than the strength of the argument. If your reaction to my statement about God was, "well, I disagree because you're an idiot", that would be an ad hominem attack.

The fact that most Americans don't know what "ad hominem" means and we have a political discourse that focuses mostly on image may be related.

So, learning the names of some of the concepts is helpful
Reply:Not important at all unless you are "old school"......Philosophy in the true sense means using logic to come to a conclusion. Whether one uses defined concepts the names and accepted meanings or terms or has their own conclusions, concepts and terms for such is a matter of perception.

Where do the meaning of names come form?

There are a lot of new names coming out....Not just popular ones that have been long established but actually NEW names. I like to look up new names for a meaning but there never is any. I guess all names have to start somewhere, so who decides what they mean if they aren't derived from some other word?

I'm asking because my middle name was made up by my mother. It has no meaning, so does my mother get to decide "what it means"? Or can I? lol

Where do the meaning of names come form?
A lot of new names are just made up so they don't really have any traditional meaning or origin. However, most names have some sort of root name or root word to them and you could find the meaning that way. So, if your name is, say, Millinea, you could look at the meaning for Melanie or Millennium to find a meaning. If it is a truly made up name then I guess you could just make up a meaning but unless it is published in a book somewhere it will probably only have that meaning to you.

I'm asking because my middle name was made up by my mother. It has no meaning, so does my mother get to decide "what it means"? Or can I? lol

Where do the meaning of names come from?
Meaning generally comes from the original language in which a name was found. The name Aidan is usually listed as meaning "little fire" because it is composed of the Irish word Aed "fire" plus a diminutive suffix. Sophia is simply the Greek word for wisdom; thus the name Sophia means "wisdom."

Names also pick up added meaning, in a way, as they are used by famous people throughout the centuries. The name Galen, for example, is sometimes listed as meaning "healer" (even though in the original language it means "calm") because Galen was a famous 2nd-century physician. The name Lydia is sometimes listed as meaning "noble" (even though the name really just means "from the region called Lydia in Asia Minor") because Lydia was a famous biblical noblewoman who helped the Apostle Paul. The more accurate name websites dispute these meanings; however, they have still become part of what the name means to us culturally.

It's difficult to assign meaning to the names that are made up based on parents just liking the sound. There are some new names (like Araceli) that are derived from genuine words or word parts (ara means "altar" and celi means "sky" in Latin), so it's easy to give meaning to those. Beyond that, it gets tricky.

Take the name Jayden for example. Is it an elaboration of the name Jay, and thus related to the bird? Or is it just part of the -aden craze (along the same lines as Braden, Zaden, Traden, and Caden) -- should its meaning be derived through Aidan? Or is it a form of the biblical name Jadon, meaning "he will judge"? Or does the meaning change depending on whether you spell the name Jayden, Jaidan, or Jadon? It's hard to say.

I'd be interested in hearing what your middle name is! If you really want a meaning for your middle name, perhaps you can look to see if it has any parts in it that have meanings in various languages. Or you can become famous, and then your name will "mean" whatever it is that you became known for! I suppose you can just make up a meaning for it if you want, but it wouldn't be particularly real or official. Good luck!

EDIT:

Some possible meanings for your name (if you want one):

"Great" (Gaelic): an elaboration of the Gaelic name Mor, meaning "great"

"Great princess" (Gaelic and Hebrew): a combination of Mor, meaning "great" in Gaelic, and Sarah, meaning "princess" in Hebrew

"Great healer" (Gaelic and Hebrew): a combination of Mor, meaning "great" in Gaelic, and Asa, meaning "doctor, healer" in Hebrew

"Great and swift" (Gaelic and Japanese): a combination of Mor, meaning "great" in Gaelic, and Sa, meaning "fast and early" in Japanese

"Of the sea" (Welsh): an elaboration of the Welsh word Mor, meaning "sea," also found in names like Morgan

"Dark-skinned" (Latin): a form of Morris or Maurus, which meant "dark-skinned" in Latin

"Walrus" (Spanish): an alternate pronunciation of the Spanish word morsa, which means "walrus"

"Inventive communicator": derived from the last name of Samuel F. B. Morse, who was a gifted painter and the inventor of the telegraph and Morse code
Reply:I don't think that made up names, which are not derived from any word in any language have a meaning at all.

You can't just go "hmmm.......Lillomarica. yes that sounds nice. and it shall mean 'she who makes the sun rise'. yes that'll do".

You know, there is simply nothing that you can base the meaning on to justify it to other people.
Reply:interesting question!

I'd like to know the same thing. I made up the name Eliyla (Eli-Luh) ..Well I've NEVER ever heard anyone say it before. So, I'm just gonna take a gander lol...but anyways...Who makes the meaning? BC idont know!
Reply:You can. But I suggest you don't make up a random meaning.

Reply:Names have meanings because they started out long ago as real, actual words... and words, of course, have meanings. When parents chose a name for their child, they used words from their everyday language that meant something.

Sometimes they picked a word that described a trait they hoped their child would have. For example, Ethan is a hebrew word meaning strength; Amy comes from the french word for love or beloved; Felicia comes from the Latin word for happy.

Some names were chosen to honor God. John comes from the hebrew word Yochanan which means God is gracious. Joshua started out as Yehoshu'a, meaning God is salvation. A lot of the most commonly used names have meanings like this, because people got them from the bible.

Some parents chose words that described things in nature, such as Astrid (star), Flora (flower) and Ava (bird).

Many names that we use as first names today started out as last names. But they, too, had meanings that described where someone lived, what they did, or what they looked like. Some examples are: Chandler = a candle maker. Ashley = someone who lived in a forest of ash trees. Reid = someone with red hair.

As you can see, many of the names we use today come from different languages, and some are hundreds or even thousands of years old. The spellings and sounds of the names have changed over time. And that's why it's not always obvious what a name's meaning is.

But not all names have meanings. Some are simply combinations of sounds that the parents liked, so they made it into a name. Then someone else heard it and named their child that, and eventually it became a common name. But didn't come from a word with any actual meaning.

But that doesn't mean that a new, made-up name doesn't mean anything. It describes YOU, and of course you mean a lot!
