I was in fermoy and seen three statues outside of the church of ireland church and inscribed on the base were the three words, mainistir, fhear and maighe. What is the meaning of the words and the significance of the statues please.
What is the meaning of the gaelic names mainistir, fhear and maighe?
Mainistir = Monastery
Fhear = Man
Maighe = A plain, also the name of a river, also spelled Moy
So all told this means the Monastery of Fermoy (a town in County Cork)
The statues are possibly allegorical figures out of the history of the town.
Reply:The guy above is right, the name of the town in Irish is Mainistir Fhear Maighe. Fermoy is an anglicisation of that name.
