What's the meaning behind the name Jake? I guess you migth have to go by Jacob - even though his given name IS Jake. And what's the most common spelling of the name "maya" (or mya?) Do you think if most people would pronouce "maya" as "my-uh" and not "may-uh"??...anyone know the meaning behind that one? Origin?

Jake comes from Jacob, which means "he who supplants".
I'd spell Maya as Maya or Maia. Both are said like "mah-yah".
Maya comes from the name of Central American Indian empire (you know, Mayans and Aztecs).
Maia is greek meaning "mother", so you could choose the spelling based on the origin.
I guess the Maia spelling is older, because of its Greek mythology background. Maia was also a Roman goddess from whom the name for the month of May originated.
The Maya spelling is more common nowadays, though.

Maya is the most common spelling. Mya is next, and Maia is somewhere down the chart a ways, along with Myah. I think most people would pronounce it My-uh, but with the "a" there, there's the definite possibility for mistake. Any of the "y" spellings make it clearer.

I think either spelling of Maya works. I prefer Mya, but I think the other one is just as easy to pronounce. I'd pronounce it My-uh.

Maya was used a little more often as the spelling for baby girls born in the US last year. Here is the number of girls with each of the spellings.
