In Western Australia a lot of place names end with 'up'. Can anyone tell me what is the meaning of this?

Most of these towns are 'down' south of the state, so I presume it has an aboriginal meaning, but no-one can enlighten me.

It seems to be an element that means "place"

for example: "Gidgegannup is an Aboriginal word meaning 'place where spears are made'. 'Gidgie' is the word for spear."
Reply:i've been told that "up" means place of or near water.. Report Abuse
