Why don't parents research the meaning of names?

Parents, please look up the names meanings before giving them to your child. I can not tell you how many kids names have bad meanings. I once knew a couple that wanted to name their child Pfahl (pronouced "fall").. which means wood stick in German! This trend of the name Camden is horrible.... Camden the #1 worst city in the USA! Why would you want to name your kid that?

Please share if you know of any crazy names people give their kids without thinking....

Thanks

Why don't parents research the meaning of names?
I agree! Why would you want you kid to be stuck with "fall" as a name anyway, regardless of what it means in German--that just adds to it! You must be near Philadelphia to know how bad Camden is; I wouldn't name a kid "Brooklyn," either! I just don't get why people make these names up like they're naming race horses or dogs! Why wouldn't you at least make the name mean something? There are plenty of exotic names that mean something! I believe in naming children after special people in one's life, myself.

Let's see....I've taught Adolf, Tai Chi, Akea (pronounced like the store), Tyronus--not spelled that way but I had to think of the dinosaur to remember how to pronounce it,

Female' --pronounced fem a lay, Nos mo king, which is from the sign "No Smoking," and Jewan--pronounced as it is written because "people pronounced "Juan" wrong, pronouncing it the intended, Spanish pronunciation--Wan.

Thanks! I needed a laugh!

Reply:Some people do not care what the meaning is. They just love the name. If I went by what half the names meant I would never pick a name. Most people in the world don't sit down and think hmmm I wonder what that person name really means. It doesnt even come to mind for most people. I didnt know Camden meant that and I wouldnt of known if you didnt say it, so who cares? Its not a bad name and I don't think people should be tied down to what certain names mean

Thats just my opinion

Yes you can go ahead and give me a thumbs down like you did. Very close minded
Reply:i have a frined after she had her c section she named her daughter araiah a-ray- ah sunshine her first and middle name is arayah sunshine .. poor kid
Reply:Yes, I know what you are saying. My sister named her baby "Mallory"...it means: "Bad omen", and was also the name of the character in "Natural born killers".
Reply:good question!! i researched the names of my children!!! before that i researched the names of my pets...( i waited 8 years after marriage to start my family..) i didn't want my child (ren) to have names that ment--cloudy day-without spirit, or cowardly soldier-delicate flower----there are millions of names, and combinations that, even though they may not apply to how your child turns out, you don't (or at least i didn't) want them to be marked with goofy name....
Reply:Bible names are not supposed to be used!

Example, you are on a boat and hear someone yelling "Jesus, jesus???" ...you think they are swearing ...but they might just be looking for their Kid. So they missuse the Name Jesus!

Don't mean to be rude, just double think before you give them a Name.

Anyways, Best of Luck!!
Reply:Someone in my family's name is Nidhi. Nidhi means wealth. This family is VERY obsessed with money (Nidhi's family). Its sad that they would want to name their daughter after wealth!

Someone in my school's name is 'Abdul which really means "Slave to The Just"
Reply:I know a man named "Simian." Apparently his mother didn't realize that "simian" means "like or having the characteristics of a monkey or ape."

My cousin-in-law actually named her younger son "Ronin." I pointed out to her that "ronin" was the Japanese word for a masterless samurai, and that was about like some Japanese mother naming her kid "mercenary." She completely ignored me. (Everybody calls the poor kid Ron now.)

Plus, I knew a friend of a friend who told me at a party that she was thinking about naming her little girl "Morrigan." I then pointed out that the Morrigan is the Celtic goddess of war, fate, death, and revenge. Legend has it that she lived next to a river of blood in a house built from the bones of war casualties. She decided on "Madigan" instead.

I've seen young mothers on this very board talking about the name "Medea" for a little girl. I guess they've never read the famous classical play about the princess Medea, who killed her children and served them to her husband after she found out he was cheating on her.

What's next? Malaryah? Aebolah? Chikungunya?
Reply:My current least-favorite but sort-of-nice-sounding name is Kennedy. It means "ugly head."
Reply:agreed
Reply:why do you care?

it is none of your buiness if people dont want to look up the meaning.

but, to answer your question. i always liked the name Adiel until i found out that it meant "the goat"
Reply:I researched my childrens names and named them names that weren't hard to pronounce or spell.

Many people just want a unique name for their child. So they spell something weird or put things together. They don't realize that most people won't be able to pronounce it correctly.

My friend went to school with twins Lemonjello and Orangejello pronounced lu- mon- ju-lo and or-ang-ju-lo. (mon and ang were the stressed syllable)

In my years of teaching I have seen Chartnieze pronounced like Shaniece, Zhanjaneigh(Za-ja-neh), Qwystal, and even Tarantula.
Reply:My husband is very big into the names having a meaning that's relevant to the specific child I on the other hand care more about the name being a nice name, spelled correctly (no "unique" spellings to make the child different, their own personality is enough to make them unique) and having a nice meaning.

My 11th grade teacher had a student named Cigarette because that's what the mother thought of after she gave birth.
Reply:I don't even know where to start with that. Unless you are going to name your child Hate what difference does it make. My name means princess but that is not why parents named me that. My last name means a combination of a grove of aspen trees and an eagles nest. There are worse cities in the USA (not many though) then Camden. If you live in Ohio why would you care about Camden NJ? A better question is what happened to normal names with normal spellings?
Reply:Camden

Kamden

It is an English name

Means unsure

IF you do not live in the northeast, you may not think of Camden, NJ

I personal do not like Camden as a name, but I will not tell people that
Reply:Why do the "meanings" matter if they like the actual NAME?

My daughter's name means blossoming angelic...Weird way, isn't it? Oh, well. I love her name.

Often, the "meaning" is FAR from the personality of the child, so why would it matter?
Reply:Most parents care about how it sounds with their last name, not the meaning. But good point!
Reply:I agree, it's a good thing to look up the meaning of a name before you decide to name your child. Also a good idea to see what the initials spell, if anything.

:D
Reply:i think u need to chill out, u are a little agressive---and I couldn't give a stuffif u gave me 10 points or not!
